2019 Annual General Meeting
Keynote Speaker: Simon Naylor

“How to Mentally Survive, then Thrive on Less than Expected”

Presented By: Simon Naylor, British Army Everest 2015 Project and Expedition Leader – Ex Warrant Officer Class 1 – Royal Army Physical Training Corps

Simon Naylor began his military career as an Aircraft Engineer, then over a 20 year period, became the Director of Training for resilience training. In this role, he is tasked with putting soldiers at physical and mental risk in order to prepare them for the potential difficulties of Operations. The harder these soldiers train and the more they are encouraged to think critically, the easier engaging the enemy and ultimately surviving, becomes, and this is where Simon lends his expertise.

These soldiers are faced with constant exposure to risk and the need to create and enable safe outcomes is paramount.  Simon works hard to encourage leadership and critical thinking with real time consequences to actions – to themselves, their team and exposed civilians, in some of the most hostile and remote areas in the World.   He is an Arctic; Desert; Sea and Mountain Expert in both leadership and survival.

OVERVIEW

“How to Mentally Survive, then Thrive on Less Than Expected”

With a tough local economy, we are all expected to do more with less. Headcount and resources remain a scarcity yet the work commitments and expectations remain impossibly high. What can we do to help navigate these challenges and persevere? How do we keep pushing forward through these obstacles?

It is with these questions in mind, that we are excited to present our keynote speaker Simon Naylor. Simon has exemplified perseverance through many harrowing experiences in both his personal and professional life. One of the most notable of these was having to survive Mount Everest on its most fateful day in April of 2015, when a 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck. As a result of this earthquake, part of the base camp was engulfed in a thundering wall of snow, rock and ice; tragically killing 24 climbers. Simon is an experienced climber and this Mount Everest expedition involved 4 years of meticulous planning and preparation. When the earthquake struck, the summiting goal he had for his team was within reach but he had to very swiftly shift focus from goal realization, to basic survival.

Simon’s experiences make him uniquely qualified to speak on the topic of resiliency and mental fortitude. Don’t miss this opportunity to learn from a master!
